The lovely 1977 Kawa Z650B1 by Retro Bike Croatia - Zagreb - and its story...

After their first build with the brand Retro Bike Croatia one year ago, Zeljko and co. had very good feedbacks and were very busy the whole season. Although they had a lot of inquiries about complete builds, since these were from everywhere but Croatia, they worked on several projects business as usual, including restorations and partial builds, and they also moved their garage to a new location. Now they finally decided to quit repairs only and focus on complete builds in order to express their creativity in full.

The first RBC's large displacement project bike is hence this 1977 Z650B1, a classic mid '70s four cylinder Kawa, they decided to name Heritage… “This bike is a B1 model, a very rare beast nowadays (at least in Croatia), with some different details compared to later models such as the front brake calipers ahead the forks, the spoke wheels, the chrome fenders, the old upper case Kawasaki logo… The bike had only one owner and it was in original state, so original that it had most of the parts produced back in 1976 by Kawasaki factory. For example the front brake lines had stamped production date of 1976 and they worked and didn't leak 38 years after. There’s nothing like that today. The Kawa was in good condition and all it needed was a good clean up, but luckily it fell in our hands and now it lives in a different shape, the RBC way. We imagined it in some kind of scrambler style, with knobbly tires and up front riding position so it went that way. In that moment some told us that it was a sacrifice, since a good old Zed should stay in it's original state … but it was meant to be this way and we're very pleased the way it is now! "

"The bike was stripped, all frame bits that held the seat, the electrics, side panels, original clocks and ignition lock were cut off, the rear loop was made. The electrics were in pretty bad shape so it was changed, the battery and ignition lock were moved in a hand made box under the seat, new seat base and seat was made, seat upholstered in genuine leather. We refurbished the good old Konis at the back rather than buying new shocks, we like to think those are cooler than new ones and they do their job. We decided to strip the engine and check it out (…). The frame, wheels, fork legs, battery box, swing arm were powder coated, some stuff in satin gloss black and some in matte black. The carburettors were completely renewed… and they now look and work like a dream. The tank was renewed inside and out, it didn't leak but it was rusty from the inside so we renewed it with quality stuff so it's like new now. (…) I can't remember it all but we changed all that needed changing on the bike.. The exhaust is 4 into 1, tailor made so the engine breathes freely. The dash is hand made, equipped with only the necessary and that's the speedo and two lamps, one is engine oil pressure and the other is neutral. The bike is fitted with two disc brakes in front (originally it had only one), new steel brake lines, the brakes are renewed so it's much more capable for stopping it. We left the original brake pump on purpose cause it's got that weird trapezoidal shape, we think it looks cool. The tank is finished in semi matte paint which looks different from different angles and light (broze to black), not invasive but special.. The tank Kawasaki logo is hand painted in black and brown."

"All in all, we wanted to achieve that different look, with some parts left as they were with that 38 year old patina, so it looks like it's brand new but with that old character… Great and fun to ride, it's lighter, it's very responsive on throttle, and it sounds beautiful! "
