Suzuki DR800 Cafe Racer

The Suzuki DR Big is an off-road/desert bike produced between 1987 and 1997, initially with a single cyclinder SACS engine 727 cc and later 779 cc. It was the stock version of the DR-Z, rode by Gaston Rahier at the Paris-Dakar rally in the late 80’s. The power of the stock model was limited to 50 hp circa, as the large displacement was mainly meant to provide huge torque for desert riding. The choice of the single cylinder allowed the engineers to get a narrower engine than any other twin of that time. No stock bike has ever had a larger cylinder displacement. Slow cruising with the higher gears was not what DR Big was meant to. That’s the limit you had to live with if you liked that bike. So, Mr. Józef Z. Istebnej from Poland decided that his DR 800 was the right base for a yard built café racer. His project, to mention the few, implied countless changes to the original bike (indeed, not particularly attractive), including the removal of the mono shock, changed for a couple of new ones, and the complete rebuild of the bodywork. The bike is still incomplete, but the result, even at this stage, is impressive.
