1979 R65 by Ed Turner Motorcycles - Chapelle-Basse-Mer, France

"I approached this construction as a challenge. The client had no special requirements except a radical and unique motorcycle on a Bmw base. So far everything was fine... One thing was really important to him: a tire worthy of the name on the back. This is where things got complicated! Connoisseurs of the brand have noticed that for the R65 as the other BMW of this period it is difficult to make a tire larger than the original size. The challenge was launched!" This time Ed Turner introduces us his R65 "head turner" and tells the full story of the two different stages of the build, commissioned by Benoit, the lucky owner of this beauty..

"The transmission has been fully rebuilt. The idea was to replace the swingarm of origin and its puny pair of dampers by a strong swingarm suspended to an adjustable monoshock. The wheels and the extremity of the gimbal is taken from a reformed R1150 police motorcycle. Inverted fork, dual disc brakes and radial caliper come from a Kawasaki Z1000. The engine block was treated at high temperature and a few pieces were polished with granule paint to highlight the inimitable flat twin. The very simplified wiring harness has kept its essential functions to be discreet in the whole. The stainless steel exhaust were made right on the machine to find their place without affecting the fluidity of the whole. The back shell which comes from a Honda CB400 has been reworked to accommodate the home made seat. The fork head which comes from another Bmw (I think) did not escape to a few changes too, including adapting the lenticular I intended to place. The tank... [which is not the one shown in the pictures, custom made in aluminium for the second version of the bike]  I prefer not to count the hours that were required to cut it into 4 pieces, reassemble more narrow to the knees passage with a flat bottom and then apply a brown metalflake and the 10 varnish layer that go with..."

"Ah... don't you  make your own tanks?!" Such a little sentence dropped like that by Bertrand Bussillet of Cafe Racer Magazine during a chat about the BMW. Just a little question... Which resounded in my mind since then! Indeed, the first release of my R65 kept its stock gastank (oh well, at least what I didn't cut ...). Thus, in order to put an end to the matter raised by my VIP guest, [one year after completing the first version of the bike] I gladly started my practice on custom aluminum tanks. But, in the middle of August, it isn't easy to find all the equipment needed for this type of exercise. So, as I wanted to silence that voice in my head, I tried a less conventional but immediately affordable approach ... The multiple slip joint pliers! The small side panels have been (de)formed by the same process. Some cramps later, the term "handmade" took all its meaning. To keep on using noble material and complete this new finery, the seat has been dressed with suede leather, cut into the back of my old Redskins. Here we have changes! So I messaged Benoît: Come and get your bike man! If you don' take it away, I go on!!!"

"Ah ... "
