Coroico-Challapata-Potosi: 645 km - 4,000m. a.s.l. on average.

"It took me two days - Salvatore says - Beautiful landscapes and good weather. I should have stopped overnight in Oruro, but I preferred to carry on riding, since the city, in addition to the carnival, has nothing to offer. I arrived to Challapata at night, a remote place that had some visibility only thanks to the 2016 Dakar race. Challapata does not offer any degree of accommodation. So, I find the only place able to host my bike in a shelter, the Alojamento Universal. A room with nothing, shared bathroom ... I think that the last time the bed sheets were changed was for the 2016 Dakar. The towel deserves a special mention: bloody dirty. I had to argue a lot to get one, let's say, clean. But for 3 euros a night, I'm happy. I spend the night in the sleeping bag and. early in the morning, I leave for Potosi. Pretty city: a whole climb up and down place, which at 4,070 m asl. is a great effort. Here I had one of the most incredible experiences of my life: a visit to the silver mines. Cerro de la Plata is the real wealth of this place and some ex-miners, in order to help the local cooperatives, organize tours in the mines... in full swing. Before entering the mine, we stop at the market to buy (optional) items to give to the miners: water, coke, pure alcohol and... dynamite! It is their custom on Friday to drink pure alcohol to celebrate the end of the working week. It is a kind of propitiatory rite, which, in spite of myself, I accomodate (the guide said it was very rude not to accept). During the visit, however, we had to stop in a 'safe' corner because ten explosive charges had to detonate. What a joy for me that I hate closed spaces. After a minute in the mine I had to pull over to take a breath and try to manage a very deep sense of asphyxiation. I don't recommend anyone to pay a visit like this, or, at least, if you really want to, make sure that there are no detonations scheduled in advance. I will never forget this day. I will never forget the dignity of the miners, so shy and private but very proud of their extremely dangerous work. The images and the video (to be listened with audiomode=on) speak for themselves."
