Whenever Winston Yeh, the mastermind behind Taipei-based Rough Crafts, turns his attention to a motorcycle, the result is rarely anything short of extraordinary. With his project, dubbed "Caliber Royale," Winston has taken the Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 and propelled it into a realm where vintage aesthetics seamlessly collide with track-ready technology. Unveiled last November at EICMA Milan, and shortly after at the Mooneyes Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show, the Caliber Royale arrives seven years after the global success of the Midas Royale (based on the Continental GT 650). It stands as its spiritual successor: a low-slung, elegant, and aggressive machine defined by a livery that masterfully alternates between gloss and matte black. Elevating the visual impact are refined, hand-applied gold leaf pinstripes, a direct nod to the prestige of its predecessor.
The most striking feature is undoubtedly the massive "dustbin" style front fairing. Extending all the way to the wheel axle, this component grants the bike a menacing, aerodynamic profile, further sharpened by dual vertically-stacked LED projectors on the left side. The fuel tank, redesigned in Rough Crafts’ signature angular style, completes a silhouette that completely redefines the volumes of the original Shotgun.
Beyond the "dark" aesthetic, the Caliber Royale hides top-tier mechanical components. The front end features inverted Öhlins FGRT forks, while the rear is handled by a pair of gas-charged shocks from the same brand. The Shotgun rolls on five-spoke BST carbon fiber wheels wrapped in high-performance Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP rubber. Braking power is entirely entrusted to premium Beringer components. Furthermore, the original swingarm has been replaced by a CNC-machined aluminum unit that stretches the wheelbase by 100 mm, providing a more stable, "dragster-like" stance. The 648cc parallel-twin breathes through a full titanium exhaust system terminating in an SC-Project muffler.
The synergy between the builder and the brand was so profound that Royal Enfield decided to celebrate Yeh’s work with the "Shotgun 650 x Rough Crafts Drop" — a limited edition of just 100 numbered units for the global market. This "factory custom" version retains the aesthetic DNA and attitude of the Caliber Royale, bringing Taipei’s exclusive design to a select group of collectors worldwide.V

Quando Winston Yeh, fondatore di Rough Crafts, mette mano a una moto nella sua Taipei, il risultato è raramente qualcosa di convenzionale. Con il suo progetto "Caliber Royale", Winston ha preso la Royal Enfield Shotgun 650 e l'ha proiettata in una dimensione dove l'estetica vintage incontra la tecnologia da pista. Presentata lo scorso novembre all’EICMA di Milano, e subito dopo al Mooneyes Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show, sette anni dopo il successo internazionale della Midas Royale (basata sulla Continental GT 650), la Caliber Royale ne è il successore spirituale: una moto bassa, elegante e aggressiva, definita da una livrea che alterna sapientemente nero lucido e nero opaco. A elevare l'impatto visivo sono i raffinati pinstripe in foglia d'oro applicati a mano, che richiamano il prestigio della sua antenata.
L'elemento che colpisce al primo sguardo è l'imponente carenatura anteriore in stile "dustbin". Questo componente, che si estende fino all'asse della ruota, conferisce alla moto un profilo aerodinamico e minaccioso, arricchito da due proiettori LED impilati verticalmente sul lato sinistro. Il serbatoio, ridisegnato nel tipico stile spigoloso di Rough Crafts, completa una silhouette che ridefinisce i volumi della Shotgun originale.
La Caliber Royale nasconde una meccanica di altissimo livello. All'anteriore troviamo la forcella Öhlins FGRT a steli rovesciati, mentre al posteriore una coppia di ammortizzatori a gas della stessa marca. La Shotgun poggia su cerchi a cinque razze in fibra di carbonio BST, calzati da pneumatici Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP . L'impianto frenante è interamente affidato a componenti Beringer. Il forcellone originale è stato sostituito con un'unità in alluminio CNC che allunga l'interasse di 100 mm, conferendo alla moto una posizione più stabile e "dragster". Il motore bicilindrico da 648cc respira attraverso un sistema di scarico completo in titanio che termina in un silenziatore SC-Project.
La collaborazione è stata così stretta che Royal Enfield ha deciso di celebrare l'opera di Yeh con la "Shotgun 650 x Rough Crafts Drop", una serie limitata di soli 100 esemplari numerati per il mercato globale. Questa versione "factory custom" riprende i dettagli estetici e l'attitudine della Caliber Royale, rendendo accessibile l'esclusivo design di Taipei a un ristretto numero di collezionisti in tutto il mondo.
Con questa nuova creazione, Winston Yeh dimostra ancora una volta come la tecnologia moderna e i materiali nobili possano convivere con l'anima classica di una Royal Enfield, scrivendo un nuovo capitolo nella storia del custom d'autore.
