Black Square

Blacksquare is the name given to this 1977 Honda CB550, built with the objective to optimize form and function, and to maximize the power to weight ratio.
No instruments, no mirrors, no front fender. No switches. No blinkers. No conveniences. No luxuries. A headlight, taillights and a license plate holder are present and functional since they are required by law. The motorcycle is street legal.

Blacksquare è il nome di questa Honda CB550 del 1977, realizzata con l'obiettivo di ottimizzare forme e funzionalità e di massimizzare il rapporto peso potenza. Non c’è strumentazione, retrovisori, parafango anteriore, interruttori, indicatori di direzione. Nessun comfort. Nessun lusso. Faro, luci posteriori e il porta targa sono presenti in quanto previsti dalla legge. La moto è omologata (in USA). 

"Only the frame, engine, front forks, rear wheel hub, and side covers were retained from the 1977 original. All other motorcycle components were either custom-made or custom-fitted. Aluminum, brass and stainless steel were used for all new custom motorcycle parts such as foot pegs, clutch and brake pedals, seat pan, brackets, velocity stacks, exhaust pipes, wheels and spokes, and many others. As a result, the motorcycle’s weight was reduced to a total of 375 lbs. This makes it possible that machine and rider could weigh a combined total of 550 lbs. Considering the engine’s displacement is 550 cc, this translates to 1 cc for a pound of weight. That is as good as a 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 weighing in at 3,353 lbs. and sporting a 3,456 cc engine." 

"Della moto originale è rimasto solo telaio, motore, forcella, mozzo posteriore. Tutti gli altri componenti sono stati realizzati artigianalmente o adattati. Alluminio, ottone e acciaio inox sono stati utilizzati per tutte le parti della moto, come: pedane, leve freno e, base sella, staffe, cornetti dell’aria, scarico, ruote e raggi, e molto altro. Il peso del moto è stato ridotto a 170 chili. Macchina e pilota potrebbero pesare complessivamente 250 kili. Considerata la cilindrata di 550 cc, questo si traduce in 1cc per meno di mezzo chilo spostato. E’ lo stesso rapporto della Porsche 911 Carrera 4 del 2014 che ha un peso di un peso di 1520 chili e un motore 3.456 cc. "
