Sanctuary RCM189 - 2000 Suzuki GSX1100SY Katana resto-mod

The Suzuki Katana was designed in 1979–1980 by the German firm Target Design upon request of Suzuki Germany, specifically for their market. The name Katana, the famous traditional sword of the ancient Samurai warriors, really made a statement about the warlike intentions of Suzuki. When, in late 1980, the GSX1100S Katana hit the street for the first time, it was claimed by Suzuki to be the fastest mass-production motorcycle in the world, ensuring the new looks were matched by unprecedented performance levels. So radical was the design departure from previous mainstream production that most major motorcycle magazines of the time said that the design would not appeal to the masses. I remember very well those days, when crossing a Katana parked on the side of the street was almost an event. Stopping for a while in front of it talking with friends about the new design was very common. Indeed, it was a bike for gangbikers and hot heads, not really fashionable or particularly cool… But everybody agreed that it was bloody fast, scary and effective. And it was a sales success that lasted several years with the Katana declined in many different versions. A motorcycle that had a lasting impact on motorcycle design. In 2000, there was still people who wanted to buy a brand new Katana. And the Suzuki pleased its customers with the Final Edition (GSX1100SY) model, only available in Japan in a limited edition consisting of 1100 units. The specs had been practically unchanged since the 1994 GSX1100SR and the ones who bought a GSX1100S in the early 90's recognize the new model instantly. The engine and wheels were black and there have been some technical improvements, but the looks were still the same. In Japan, there was a bit of a fight to get to get the last examples of the classic super sport, and a rumor still is that the Suzuki had been fiddling with the serial numbers, that there were actually more than 1100 units made... That shows the popularity of the Katana model in Japan. Sanctuary, a brand which stands to the Japanese classic bikes more or less the same way AMG stands to the Mercedes sportcars, took one of these relatively recent models and brought it to the primitive aggressive personality, returning even more than the original 110 hp to the bike thanks to the FCR carbs and the new exhausts and improving the mechanics and the overall performance using state of the art components. The sword is not broken, the legend lives on.
