A beautiful 2000 Yamaha XT600 turned into a charming Supermoto by 86-Gear

This 2000 Yamaha XT600-DJ021 was ridden for years by his owner as his daily bike. One day this guy he got to 86 Gear workshop to upgrade it with 1994 Yamaha TT600S parts. But the TT600 sourced by Christian Boosen turned out to be in such a great shape that his customer chose it for his off road adventures. That switch sealed the XT600’s fate: it was transformed into Supermoto – a radical riding machine that keeps only its essential heritage.

The project took about 1,5 year to be completed. The frame was modified and shortened. To get a smooth overall line of the bike, Christian decided to adapt a 1983 XT500 alloy fuel tank, keep its original iconic paint scheme and fabricate a matching bratstyle seat. In the circumstances, a Motogadget speedo resulted compulsory. And the asymmetric headlight mount? A touch of class. The bike got brand new Supermoto rims, a new YSS rear shock and progressive fork springs. The brake system was upgraded with a high-performance brake master cylinder and a bigger front rotor. Of course, the bike got complete new electrics and a tiny battery that still has enough power to crank the engine. The engine was subject to special care: high compression piston and TT600 Mk1 camshaft gave a significant power boost. An oil cooler was added, connection rod, in and outlet ducts, while rockers were polished and the inlet ducts were adapted to the diameter of the new Mikuni TM34 flat side twin carb. A custom air intake with K&N pod filter was also fabricated to guide the air smoothly around the mono-shock system: together with the aggressive bespoke exhaust they make the engine breath with full lungs. Finally, a hydraulic clutch was added complete the technical update and to properly deal with the upgraded clutch springs. In the end, despite of the classic look, there is barely anything left of the original character of the 600cc single. Thanks to the new carb and camshaft the bike reacts very sensitively to the throttle and without a gentle hand, this is the kind of bike you can use as hat. According to Christian, the riding performance of this beauty matches those of a modern sport bike and I tend to agree...

Tendo a crederci...
